For Those Who Come After
Step into the living archive of James Baldwin.
For Those Who Come After is an immersive installation that invites you into an intimate dialogue with the life, spirit, and legacy of one of the most powerful voices in 20th-century literature and thought. More than a traditional exhibition, this is a layered encounter—a space of listening, questioning, and deep remembering.
Each area in the experience is a portal to Baldwin’s archive. Turn on a vintage radio to uncover a sonic essay. Drop the needle on a vinyl to hear a curated playlist of liberation songs from Baldwin's collection. Turn on the television and soak in knowledge from James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni's groundbreaking conversation. The space becomes a living room of layered meaning across the domestic, political, and spiritual.
Interact with memory, ancestry, voice, insight, spirit (m.a.v.i.s.)
At its center is a ritual station: a desk, a typewriter, and three card stacks labeled Wisdom, Courage, Love. The typewriting machine represents one of James Baldwin’s closest creative collaborators—his favorite typewriter, m.a.v.i.s.
You are invited to pose a question to the typewriter. In response, the type writer will instruct you on pulling three cards relevant to your situation, each with a unique Baldwin quote. The typewriter responds with a poetic reflection, generated from the spirit of Baldwin’s archive. The printed page is yours to keep—part oracle, part souvenir.
This installation is an invitation to have a conversation across time with your participation becoming part of a ritual of remembrance and possibility.
m.a.v.i.s. is coming to the digital realm
The m.a.v.i.s. typewriter is the physical embodiment of For Those Who Come After the digital experience—an AI-assisted platform that extends this dialogue into the digital realm. Just as the typewriter invites you to commune with Baldwin’s words in real time, the forthcoming platform transforms his archive into an interactive space for study, reflection, and imagination. Launching in 2026, For Those Who Come After will allow you to continue the conversation from anywhere in the world, deepening your connection to Baldwin’s wisdom and legacy.
